This week, six young people were recognized for their dedication to Hong Kong and engagement in service. They are all recipients of The Hong Kong Youth Service Award. Each winner has balanced their personal and professional life with serving others, becoming role models for all of us.
These annual awards are not only a form of public acclamation and encouragement, but also a reminder that the future of the community lies with those who are prepared to make difference today.

uTouch Cyber Youth Outreach Project wins award in Shanghai
A project devised and run by HKFYG's Media Counselling Centre won a Gold Award in Shanghai on 14 November at the Wofoo Asian Award for Advancing Family Wellbeing 2014. Organized by CIFA, (Consortium of Institutes on Family in the Asian Region), the award was for the uTouch Cyber Youth Outreach Project which connects with 6-24 year-olds online and helps those with emotional, behavioural or addiction problems. Interlocking at 400 Square: a Youth Drama Training Scheme 2014
Interlocking at 400 Square is the latest youth drama presented by HKFYG's Tin Shui and Jockey Club Tin Yiu Youth SPOTs. It is the story of four young people living in Hong Kong's crowded, sub-divided flats and the effect on their families, careers and love affairs. Coming in the wake of the tremendously successful Story of Tin Shui Wai, a musical produced by the Youth SPOTs last year, this is the culmination of a drama training scheme sponsored by the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The scheme involves a stage play, professional theatre training, backstage production and performance opportunities. The show will be at Tuen Mun Town Hall Cultural Activities Hall on 6-7 December, Saturday at 8pm, Sunday 2.30-4.30pm. Tickets: HK$20 from URBTIX. M21 works with Wharf Holdings Ltd on micro movie-making in Project WeCan
From the end of this month till September next year, the HKFYG Jockey Club M21 will be offering training in micro movie-making to pupils at the Cotton Spinners Association Secondary School, Po Leung Kuk C W Chu College and Buddhist Ho Nam Kam College. Hong Kong Science Project Competition 2015 - From Theory to Practice: Develop Science Potential
2015 is the United Nations Year of Light and there will be a special Light Science award in this popular annual competition organized by HKFYG, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, sponsored by the Innovation and Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. There will be 3 divisions: Scientific Wallchart Division, Junior Division and Senior Division. BEST Basketball Elite Skill Training
with Ruthie Bolton
Former American Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) player, Ruthie Bolton, will offer professional Basketball Elite Skill Training (BEST) to 12-17 year olds at day camps from 20-24 December for HK$3500 per head. Training will be at the HKFYG Jockey Club Sai King Outdoor Training Camp and the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park Sports Centre. The events culminate at the Finals of the HKFYG Cup 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament on Christmas Eve at Kowloon Bay Sports Centre. Youth volunteers serve loving soup to the need in Tin Shui Wai with help from Chinachem Group and Tin Yiu Estate Management Advisory Committee
On 15 November, HKFYG's neighbourhood First teams gave out soup [鄰舍愛心湯] to needy households and elderly people in Tin Shui Wai. Around 1,500 people benefitted from the soup which was made with ingredients contributed by neighbours, Chinachem Group and Tin Yiu Estate Management Advisory Committee. Youth Crime Prevention Centre Study on marginal youth's first experience of sex
HKFYG's Youth Crime Prevention Centre has released findings of its latest qualitative study conducted with academics at City University of Hong Kong. In-depth interviews with 36 youth at risk revealed that 86% had their first sexual experience between the ages of 12 and 18. For 75% it was at home or at their partner's home and 44% had negative feelings about it. Recommendations include providing methods for parents to raise the issue of sex with their children, provision of love and sex counselling and the importance of timely education about the risks of sexual intercourse at an early age Full details at ycpc.hkfyg.org.hk/youthlaw or contact Tze-ching tel 3755 7070.
HKFYG Youth Research Centre Study on the Young Working Poor
Findings of a Federation study of over 500 youth aged 15-34 reveals that the majority think youth today have limited opportunities. Perceptions of the main causes for poverty in the young employed were expensive housing (29.8%), low academic qualifications (25.4%), a narrow job market (24.9%), high cost of living (21.1%) and unstable work (18.1%). 20 interviews with the young working poor were also conducted. Many had part-time or temporary menial jobs in catering or retail.
