| Starting the New Year by caring and sharing |

As with every New Year, resolutions are made. Why not make a resolution to care for others this year, especially the vulnerable in our communities.
The Neighbourhood First initiative aims to bring joy and care into the homes of those who may be lonely or without, by visits from young volunteers. Very soon, young people from our Neighbourhood Teams will demonstrate their care for neighbours at our Neighourhood First Reunion Lunch on 25 January as Chinese New Year approaches. Over 1,000 tables in 18 districts will be hosted and a total of 12,000 people are expected. In Kowloon City, the main venue, there will be 150 tables and Financial Secretary The Hon John Tsang Chun-wah, GBM, JP has kindly agreed to be our Guest of Honour. The event is supported by senior and local government officials, chairpersons of District Councils, community leaders and neighbourhood commercial partners.
Let us start 2014 with a giving heart and caring spirit. Happy New Year to one and all!

Youth! - don't gamble! HKFYG Youth Crime Prevention Centre programme supported by Ping Wo Fund
Gambling is a social activity for some at-risk youth, so with Ping Wo Fund sponsorship, HKFYG's Youth Crime Prevention Centre uses Facebook, its Youthlaw apps and WhatsApp to give guidance. The target of outreach social workers in Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O is 12,000 young night drifters on this educational anti-youth gambling programme which runs till the end of 2014. Recycling at Work in HKFYG Youth SPOT Collection Points
Last year, Environmental Protection Department set up Community Collection Points which are supported by HKFYG with Community Recycle Networks at its Youth SPOTs. People bring recyclables that would otherwise go to waste to earn stamps which can be redeemed for household goods. The networks set up by HKFYG almost a year ago have had a remarkable effect with a 6-fold increase in recycling in the first six months, with a total of 325kg of plastic bottles, 450kg of glass bottles, and 180kg of small electrical and electronic equipment collected. All of these either went to Kowloon Bay Material Transfer Centre or Tuen Mun EcoPark. Do join in and take unwanted recyclables to our Collection Points. Movie Friday: an invitation from M21 for film lovers
to review with the HKFYG app
From 20 December 2013 till March 2014, HKFYG app users can watch all the M21 short films and videos produced by youth and write their own reviews on the app. The 5 best reviews each week will get a cinema gift card valued at HK$150 for use in all Broadway, Palace and AMC Cinemas. The Felix Wong Youth Improvement Award calls for nomination
The Felix Wong Youth Improvement Award was set up to give formal recognition to local secondary school students or young people aged 12-18 who have made a great effort to overcome hardship or misfortune. The winners chosen on nomination by school principals, teachers and social workers are given scholarships to pursue personal development. Nominations now welcome! HKFYG Hong Kong Melody Makers Season Opening Concert - a cappella Time Tunnel
On 4 January from 8-10pm the opening concert will be at the Jehovahjireh Concert Hall, International Christian Quality Music Secondary and Primary School with the support of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. Free admission for students via school applications. $130 for the general public. Half-price tickets for senior citizens aged 60+ and people with disabilities with their helpers. Full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients also eligible for 50% discount. First-come-first-served. Community Building projects funded by the Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries
HKFYG's Jockey Club Farm Road Youth SPOT and the youth-at-risk outreach team in Tsuen Wan and Tseung Kwan O have been given over $150,000 and $70,000 respectively by the Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries for community-building projects. The Youth SPOT project encourages young people to meet and offer help to underprivileged members of the community. The outreach team will offer vulnerable youth cognitive behavioral therapy, music workshops and other opportunities. Contact Brenda, tel 3755 7102 more details.
