The Federation's counsellors are concerned. This year, they have been handling extreme cases of multiple mental health problems. Students have been contacting them, on What's App, by instant messenger, in text messages and through the hotline. They sometimes call a hundred times a day, saying they have nowhere else to go and they want to kill themselves.
What can be done about such a predicament? Federation social workers assess the risks these young people are to themselves and consult clinical psychologists to decide on a strategy. Often parents are in the best position to help but there may be poor communication and conflict at home. They may turn to teachers instead because part of the stress comes from life at school.
Many youngsters need reassurance, love, affection, and a sense of self-worth, more than anything else. There are so many reasons for self-doubt. Parents and teachers, confronted with such confusion, can turn to the professionals, to the school social workers and counselors.

Talk to Your Child: a new phone-in show for parents hosted by M21 and HKFYG's Parent-child Mediation Centre
The HKFYG Jockey Club M21 and the Federation's Parent-child Mediation Centre are jointly running a new phone-in programme called Talk to Your Child. Social workers will be sharing information about cases of parent-child relationships as well as taking calls from parents. The live programme will be broadcast on http://m21.hk every Tuesday from
2-2.30pm starting from 10 December.

Second Visiting My Neighbours programme makes cookies with chefs from the Regal Supreme
The second Visiting My Neighbours programme will be launched on Saturday 21 December 2013 in 13 Hong Kong districts. Heng Fai Chuen and Shaukeiwan Youth SPOTs, both in Eastern District, are the organizers. It's all about offering good things to your neighbours. With a group of chefs from the Regal Supreme 100 young members of the Federation's Neighbourhood Teams will make cookies for families, tradesmen and district council members in Eastern District. The teams in 12 other districts will then visit neighbours and offer the cookies as Christmas gifts. At the same time they will also give invitations to the upcoming Neighbourhood First annual reunion lunch on 25 January 2014. 5 awardees receive recognition of dedication and integrity with Hong Kong Youth Service Awards
The Hon CY LEUNG, GBM, GBS, JP, Chief Executive of the HKSAR, presented The Hong Kong Youth Service Awards on 12 November 2013. This annual award recognizes the dedication and integrity of youth who exemplify the core values of community service. It publicly encourages individuals to become role models, particularly to their peers, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps. The 5 awardees were Bonnie Tang Man-lam, Calvin Lam Wai-ho, Emmy Li Yuen-mei, Clive Lee Ka-lun and Wayne Chau Pui-por. The CE and Professor Joseph JY Sung, SBS, JP, Vice-Chancellor / President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong delivered keynote addresses. Chief Secretary for Administration talks to teens about poverty
at HKFYG Jockey Club M21
Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, GBS, JP Chief Secretary for Administration, discussed poverty policy with 360 teens at the HKFYG Jockey Club M21 on 4 November. A live broadcast of the dialogue included questions taken via the internet. The programme can be found at m21.hk. This is one of an ongoing series of dialogues with policymakers at M21 on such subjects as the budget and long-term housing policy. HKFYG Jockey Club a cappella Education Programme at Hong Kong International
a cappella Contest 2013
Following up on last year's success, the finals of this contest put the spotlight on over a dozen a cappella groups from Hong Kong and abroad. They will compete in the Hong Kong International a cappella Contest 2013 on 24 November. The event takes place at the HKAPA Jockey Club Amphitheatre. Awards will be given for champions in three categories: Open Division (Vocal band); School Division (Choir Ensemble) and School Division (Vocal Band). This event marks the start of the HKFYG Jockey Club a cappella Education Programme, 2013/2016 sponsored exclusively by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. Invitation to HKFYG's Museum: exhibits of Chinese jade carvings, figurines, and ceramics donated by Lisa's Collection, Mrs Cheung Chung Lai-seung and other philanthropists
The HKFYG Museum was set up in 2013 and showcases stunning artefacts, including some Neolithic period Chinese jade carvings. Porcelain and other ceramics have also been generously donated by Lisa's Collection, Mrs Cheung Chung Lai-seung and other collectors. The museum encourages young people to get involved. They learn about the preservation of ancient Chinese art while developing their own creative and artistic talent. A series of talks by eminent scholars, collectors and up-and-coming young artists is planned. 89% of youth spend 3½ hours a day on mobile phones:
HKFYG poll survey results
Nearly 89% of all those polled said that they were smartphone users and about three-quarters used instant messaging most. Social networking (42%) and games (41%) were the next most popular. On average, smartphone users had loaded 23 free apps and had paid for 1-2 paid apps in their phones. They spent an average of 3½ hours a day on the phones and over two-thirds kept the phones on all day. Nearly half of them felt less secure going out without a phone than they did going out without money. This survey, 520 young people aged 10-24, HKFYG YIT survey no 2, was conducted in August and September this year 2013. Go to
