It is not easy to get a job when you are young, especially if you do not have the right qualifications, experience or talent. These were the findings of a Federation study released today which revealed that for school leavers who are not academically inclined, the usual options are short-term part-time jobs, perhaps in the catering or retail industry, but over 40% of them say lack of work experience is their main problem. Failure to get a single interview after dozens of enquiries is not uncommon.
The Federation advises that what's needed is clearer, widely publicized information about youth pre-employment services. More resources at school for career planning, and more temporary posts for school leavers and associate degree holders in government and NGOs, can all contribute to a productive young workforce. It's possible now and will be needed more than ever in future as the population ages.

Pilot Scheme in Shanghai: cross-border study tour for post-secondary financial talent partnered by the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau and organized by the FinMan Committee
Funding has been received from the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau, HKSARG, to implement a study tour in Shanghai organized by the Fin Man Committee (Advisory Committee on Human Resources and Development in the Financial Services Sector). It runs from 13 June-21 July for 28 university students with talent in finance, with HKFYG as the supporting organization. Visits to government offices, regulators and exchanges in Hong Kong and Shanghai will take place, plus a 4-week work attachment with financial services companies. The aims are to enhance understanding of the monetary systems and financial markets of Hong Kong and mainland China as well as their business culture and financial company practice. RECRUITING NOW! Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme 2013/14
The Hong Kong Young Ambassador Scheme, jointly organized by the Tourism Commission and HKFYG, will be conducted for the 13th time, from 1 September 2013 till 31 July 2014, with support from the Hong Kong Association for Customer Service Excellence as a co-organizer and venue sponsorship from Youth Square. The scheme's objective is to increase the participant's sense of belonging and enhance the community's understanding and appreciation of hospitality and service excellence. This year, the Young Service Stars Programme will be incorporated with a theme of Hip Hong Kong and the city-wide public participation campaign Hong Kong: Our Home. The training programme runs from 19 July-30 August 2013 with a series of talks, workshops, company visits, mentorship programmes and a group project competition. One2free Road Safety app competition at M21 followed by mentored training
This mobile game app competition, judged by Dr Hubert Chan and Mr Tony Hau of the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK) and Mr Ricky Chong (Director, Product & Service/Marketing, CSL), is being followed by mentorship and in-depth training on app development. Run in collaboration with the Communications Association of Hong Kong and the Office of the Communications Authority, the training for secondary students takes place from June to August. M21 has appointed professional app developers from LogicToken Co Ltd and Aspiring Technologies Ltd to teach concepts. From Theory to Practice‧Develop Science Potential: Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2013 Final Results
Jointly organized by HKFYG, the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum, and supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks, the competition had an exciting climax last Saturday, recorded by media partners HKTV News Channel and Roadshow. Champions of the junior division for both Invention and Investigation projects were The Chinese Foundation Secondary School with the Tactile Handwriting and Word Learning Kit for Dyslexic Students, and Breath Safely. Champions in the senior division were STFA Yung Yau College for their invention, HeartBook & SmartHelper and King's College for their investigation, Never Run out of Juice - The Juicy Solar Cell.

Burberry Foundation leverages core competencies and resources to enhance youth employability
The Federation's Youth Employment Network is liaising with the Burberry Foundation on the Burberry Create job training programme for students leaving secondary school this summer. It draws on a culture of creativity, design and innovation to offer exciting learning opportunities that raise skill levels, aspirations and confidence. Through real-world work experience and challenges, with mentoring from Burberry, students learn basic business knowledge, career planning skills, interpersonal communication and job search methods. Placements with Burberry HK follow June-August and post placement follow-up helps students consolidate what they have learned. Video Production from Idea to Screen supported by the Commission on Youth
HKFYG's multimedia centre, M21, has funding from the Commission on Youth for a series of video production workshops from 15 July to 10 August. They are for secondary school entrants who took part in the Short Film Contest organized by the Home Affairs Department and will be held at M21 in Aberdeen. The objectives are to widen young people's horizons by fostering creativity through visual expression to reflect Hong Kong's core values. Director, Jeremy Yung will give a lecture on Video Production from Idea to Screen at the kick-off ceremony on 30 June in The Hong Kong Central Library Lecture Theatre and video directors, Kim Ming Lam and Nickel Liong will conduct the training workshops this summer.
