Caring for Neighbours

Neighbourhood First Rice Giving
The Federation's Neighbourhood First is a major community building initiative that encourages young people to care for and support neighbours. Over 3,000 members are in Hong Kong's districts, visiting neighbours, getting to know them, finding out what they need and weaving a safety net of community support. One example of their work with the disadvantaged is a year-round rice donation scheme that began in 2010, courtesy of the Au Bak Ling Charity Trust.

Rice costs the average family about HK$850 each year, a significant portion of a needy family's budget. So this year, 1,000 volunteers aged 16-35 will participate in the rice giving scheme.* The majority are pupils at secondary school who make monthly visits, taking 5 kilos of rice each time to every family. In 2013, their target is 3,650 families, a number that grows every year since the project began.

Since 2010, a staggering 210,000 kilos of rice have been delivered in 14 districts. Thousands of volunteers taking thousands of bags of rice to thousands of families. It means networking, engagement and involvement with the community. It means caring for neighbours because they believe that Neighbourhood comes First.

*See below for news on the Neighbourhood First- community net and rice giving kick-off ceremony this Saturday at Sha Tin Park. Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, GBS, JP, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, is Guest of Honour. Another Neighbourhood First community net project is supported by the Community Investment and Inclusion Fund with a $2,657,000 subsidy for 3,000 volunteers.Full details at http://neighbourhoodfirst.hk/
