New budget initiative on pilot microfinance scheme welcomed

The Financial Secretary delivered the last Budget of his term yesterday. While we agree with the general positive consensus on the various waivers, subsidies and grants, we particularly welcome the assistance offered to those wishing to start their own businesses.

We believe that implementing a three-year pilot scheme to make microfinance available is especially helpful to young people who might otherwise lack the financial resources for entrepreneurship or self-enhancement training. With microfinancing, young people can be encouraged to seek new avenues to enhance their employability, so much needed in times of economic uncertainty.

This scheme will be run in partnership with the government, non-profit organizations and other stakeholders. The Federation, with its own Youth Employment Network, looks forward to being involved and thus offering young people another avenue of hope for economic self-sustainability.
