WISER Net and Internet misuse |
Life without the internet is difficult to imagine in the developed world and inevitably its impact on youth is a serious issue. Over the summer holidays most young people find that they have time to spare and many of them turn to the web. A Federation survey of over 2,011 pupils at primary and secondary level confirmed this, showing that a large majority used the net during the school holidays and over a third spent more than 4 hours online every day, most of them playing games, using ICQ or MSN. |
These statistics are worrying and the two-year HKFYG WISER Net Educational Project for Problematic Internet Users, sponsored by the Quality Education Fund, is providing support for students, concerned parents and teachers. In the light of more disturbing news of compulsive online gaming and widespread downloads of pornographic material by youth we are working out preventive strategies for parents and schools and coping strategies for youngsters. If you have experience of internet addiction that you would like to share please contact Cecilia, tel 2788 3444. Your input is most welcome.
